RESTRICTED
I need my restricted licence (6R)
FAQ'S
CBTA Restricted Assessment – Everything You Need to Know (and a Bit You Didn’t Ask For)
How Much Does It Cost?
Just $185 – cheaper than a speeding ticket and way more useful.
Where Are Assessments Held?
We run CBTA Restricted Assessments from:
Albany • Henderson • Westgate • Botany • Orewa • Pukekohe • Hamilton • Tauranga • Taupō
So unless you live in a cave (or Invercargill), there’s probably one near you.
When Can I Sit the Assessment?
If you’ve got your Learner Motorcycle Licence (Class 6L), you can do your CBTA Restricted whenever you’re ready. No 6-month wait. No extra practical test at the AA or VTNZ.
The only catch: you must be at least 16 ½ years old.
Sorry 16-year-olds – the half matters.
Do I Need My Own Bike?
Yep* – but it’s gotta be LAMS approved (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme).
Check the official LAMS list here.
*Don’t have one? No problem. We can hook you up with a hire bike at Hobsonville or Pukekohe for just $45.
You’ll need to be 21+ to hire. To book, flick us an email at info@passmasters.nz or call 09 947 9409.
What Does the CBTA Restricted Involve?
The CBTA 6R is all about proving you’ve got the skills to ride safely and confidently.
-
You’ll ride with an NZTA-approved CBTA assessor following on their own bike.
-
We’ll be chatting via top-of-the-line 2-way Bluetooth intercoms (so you’ll hear our silky radio voice).
-
We’ll check your riding in a mix of urban and open road conditions.
How Long Does the Assessment Take?
The actual riding part takes 50–60 minutes, but allow up to 1.5 hours for the whole thing (briefing, paperwork, banter).
Do I Need Training First?
It’s not compulsory – but if you want the best shot at smashing your CBTA Restricted first go, we highly recommend it.
Our Ride Forever Bronze Course is designed to help riders prep for their 6R assessment.
The best part? It’s only $20 thanks to ACC subsidies.
That’s less than lunch in Auckland.
