Stage 1 · Class 6L
Get your motorcycle learner licence
Learn the fundamentals in a controlled environment, complete your Basic Handling Skills Test, then take your certificate to a licensing agent and sit the learner theory test.
The learner process
Three steps to your motorcycle learner licence
Passmasters completes the practical training and Basic Handling Skills Test. Your theory test and licence application are completed separately through a driver licensing agent.
Train in a safe environment
Learn balance, clutch and throttle control, braking, changing gears, steering and basic manoeuvres on a supplied motorcycle.
Complete your BHST
Demonstrate the required low-speed handling skills. When you pass, you receive a Basic Handling Skills certificate.
Pass the theory test
Take your certificate to a licensing agent, complete the application process and pass the motorcycle learner theory test.
Training and BHST options
Choose based on your current experience
All three options include use of a suitable training motorcycle, coaching and the Basic Handling Skills Test.
Not sure which session to choose? The two-hour option is the best starting point when you have never operated a geared motorcycle. Contact us before booking when you are uncertain.

Before and after your session
What you need to know
Minimum age
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a New Zealand motorcycle learner licence.
What to wear
Wear long trousers and sturdy enclosed footwear. A training motorcycle, helmet and gloves are provided for the session.
After you pass
Your BHST certificate is not the licence itself. You still need to apply through a licensing agent and pass the motorcycle theory test.
Once you have your 6L
Build road experience before your next licence step
Learner riders must follow licence conditions, including using a LAMS-approved motorcycle, displaying an L plate, not carrying passengers and not riding between 10pm and 5am. Check the current NZTA rules before riding.
ACC Ride Forever Bronze
Build confidence and real-road skills after gaining your learner licence. Bronze focuses on observation, positioning, control and safer riding decisions.
Prepare for CBTA Restricted
When you are a confident and consistent road rider, explore the CBTA 6R pathway toward your Restricted motorcycle licence.
Learner FAQs
Common questions before booking
I have never ridden before. Can I book?
Yes. Choose the two-hour session. The trainer will start with the controls and build your skills progressively in a controlled environment.
Is the motorcycle included?
Yes. A suitable training motorcycle is provided, along with a helmet and gloves. Wear long trousers and sturdy enclosed footwear.
Am I guaranteed to pass the BHST?
No. The examiner must be satisfied that you can complete the required skills safely and consistently. Additional training may be recommended when you are not test-ready.
Does passing the BHST give me my learner licence?
No. It provides the certificate needed to apply. You must then complete the licensing-agent application and pass the learner theory test.
