FAQ'S
Motorcycle Learner Licence – FAQs
What Do I Need to Do?
To get your motorcycle learner licence in NZ, you’ll need to complete two steps:
- The Practical Test – a.k.a. the Basic Handling Skills (BHS) test.
- The Theory Test – the written (well… computer) part.
You must be at least 16 years old to apply. Sorry, 15-year-olds – the law says you’ll have to wait.
Where Are BHS Courses Held?
We currently run Basic Handling Skills courses in:
Pukekohe • Manukau • Henderson • Whangaparāoa • Hamilton • Tauranga
So whether you’re a city commuter, a Waikato wanderer, or a Bay of Plenty beach hopper, there’s a spot near you.
How Many People Are in the Course?
Usually just you and your instructor – one-on-one, relaxed, and focused.
Want to bring a mate (or two) for moral support? We can run small group sessions if you book together.
How Much Does It Cost?
-
1 hour – $145. (For those who can already ride a motorcycle with clutch/gears.)
-
1.5 hours – $199. (For those who can ride but are a little rusty or for scooter riders upgrading to a motorcycle.)
-
2 hours – $265 (For those who are new to motorcycle riding (extra time may be required).
All options include use of one of our motorcycles (LAMS approved), or bring your own if you prefer.
The Practical Test – Basic Handling Skills (BHS)
This is where you learn and demonstrate your low-speed control, braking, cornering, and hazard awareness.
-
Conducted one-on-one (unless you bring friends).
-
Run in a safe, controlled environment.
-
By the end, you’ll be able to ride away with confidence… and hopefully not into a fence.
The Theory Test
Once you pass the BHS, we’ll hand you a certificate. Take it to VTNZ or AA, sit your theory test, and you’re officially on your way.

What’s Involved in the Practical Test?
Watch the video below for a sneak peek at what’s required. It’s not a race – think of it as a skills check before hitting the road.
